Update:

January 2008  A new year and a new studio.  I moved out of Lowell Art Works into a larger studio space that will host my printing press and monotype printmaking classes:

exPRESSive Arts Studio - 3710 W Mukilteo Blvd., Ste. #1, Everett WA 98203

February 2007 - The Monroe Arts Council show and auction resulted in a nice write up in the Monroe Monitor, our local newspaper.  Click here for the pdf of the article.  Monroe Monitor Write Up - Karon Leigh

January 2007 - I recently started working in encaustic, which is pigmented wax.  I am excited about this new medium and the versatility if offers which allows me to combine mixed media and create 3 dimensional works.  Please check out the "Mixed Media" page and visit the Arts of Snohomish Gallery in Snohomish, WA to view these pieces in person. www.artsofsnohomish.org

September 2007 I just joined the Lowell Art Works Studio Group and am now sharing a studio in the building - www.lowellartworks.com 5205 S. 2nd Avenue, Everett, WA.  This is very exciting as 6 other new artists have just joined.  I see good things for this space.

Special Projects:    Dawson Place, Everett, WA:  I am grateful to have participated in a group project with other local artists and the Imagine Children's Museum in Everett through the Leadership Snohomish County to create an art filled space for the children and families visiting the Dawson Place, a newly established Children's Advocacy Center.  The intention of the project is that "the healing power of art is subtle yet effective, with its language of color and shape, it can distract a child, easing her or his fear." *

Artist's Bio:

Karon Leigh grew up Michigan and the California Bay Area where she was an award winning artist in high school.  Her first solo art show was a surprise presented in the library of West High School in Berkeley, California when Karon was in 9th grade. Her art teacher, Mr. Mingo was the curator of this surprise event as he was impressed with her work.  Karon had also won the local Black History month art award under Mr. Mingo's lead that year.  For Karon, art was the only reason for going to school. After high school she attended the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California.  As life permitted, she continued her art training off and on into and throughout her adult life and has studied at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and the Kirkland Arts Center in Kirkland, Washington in addition to numerous workshops with professional artists.  For the past ten years she has been a single mother of three sons.  She currently lives with her teenage son, the youngest of three and her dog, Sonny at the foot of the Cascade Mountains in Gold Bar, WA. She enjoys working with a variety of materials including pastels, paints, printmaking and collage.  Her artwork focuses on her life experiences and often times is a healing process through life's most challenging times.  She learned to find art and joy in the little everyday things in life.  Her art celebrates this perspective with images of the human spirit as well as the beauty of the landscapes and surroundings of her home in the Pacific Northwest.

Artist's Statement:

When I was a child I remember the magic of exploring the woods behind my house, looking for fairies and discovering the unknown.  The distractions of our lives as we grow often keep us from searching for the magic and finding our adventure.  My artwork takes me back to possibilities of fairies.

During an unseasonable heat wave after many days of cold and rain, I was cleaning out the gutters and found that remarkable little pieces of art had been created in the rain troughs.  These almost handmade paper quality creations inspired me to either include the nature made art into my own work somehow or to investigate the patterns in nature through my artwork.   Art is all around us everyday.  It is in the beauty and the mystery of the world we live in.

I've always felt the need to "make stuff".  I don't follow the rules and I color outside the lines. I don't feel the need to explain myself or my art.  It just is.  I make it because I need to.  It is my passion.  If others can relate to or appreciate the imagery or feelings in my artwork, that's wonderful. I would say "that's just icing on the cake" - but I'm trying to avoid cake - and icing too - so I'll just say:    Enjoy!
