RECENT WORKS - Oil on Canvas: During the winter of 2005-2006 I was forced to paint at the dining room table as my studio space in the garage had become too cold to work in. This reclusive winter period allowed me to explore my ever increasing seasonal winter depression and the opportunity to paint gave me a reason to get up in the morning. This winter particularly has affected me more than others with the long, dark, cold and rainy days blurring into weeks and months to where I question why I live here and dream only of lying on sun filled beaches in a tropical climate. There are frequent wind storms at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, up to 50 mph., that knock out power, blow branches off the tree tops and whistle and howl throughout the night limiting the opportunity for a sound and tranquil sleep to those of us that live here. Landscapes have always appealed to me as they are the reminder of how we fit into this world. I was curious and reflective of how the addition of weather into the landscape affects how we feel about where we live and how we interact in our environment. The recent paintings in oil are my expression of the contrast in seeking out the beauty of the pacific northwest landscapes while struggling to see beauty at all through the winter weather induced depression. |
